Art Smith is a retired geologist and probably the most knowledgeable 'mineral guy' at Houston Gem & Mineral Society (HGMS). Anytime someone has a mineral specimen they don't know how to identify, they head to Art Smith for his opinion, knowing he will be correct.

Of all the great articles written for the HGMS's publication "The BackBenders Gazette", Art is by far the most prolific. He has won awards, year after year, for his learned treatises on minerals, mineral trips, and detailed information on minerals. His awards, among others, come from the South Central Federation of Mineral Societies and the American Federation of Mineralogical Societies, annual writing judging of articles in various gem, mineral and fossil club publications, regionally and nationally.
